Something Evil This Way Comes: blogging ovarian cancer

28th Feb 2006, 02:37 GMT

Filed under: Ovarian Cancer Spike, diagnosed with ovarian cancer, began blogging Something Evil This Way Comes about the adventures of Spike and Elaine in Spike’s ongoing medical saga of ordeals and triumphs in ovarian cancer survivorship. Elaine blogs there too, sharing her perspective about watching someone you love in danger and pain. Elaine marvels at Spike, whom she now believes is not human, but a rather radically advanced super-human, in all that Spike has endured in surgeries and cancer treatments. A few years before Spike's ovarian cancer diagnosis, she had gone in to complain about pain. The physician felt it might be endometriosis, but without an operation, no one could know for sure. Basically, Spike would have to live with the pain. Two years later, the pain is getting worse, and Spike goes back in to see her physician. This time, after tests are done, they discover ovarian cancer. That was in the spring of 2004. Spike really likes her GP, who treats her, as Spike says, "like a human being." Spike becomes a gold-star patient and her blog is rich in description of quite ordinary events, that when told by Spike or Elaine, become elevated storytelling moments. You read to the end because you enjoy the fluid journey of a well-crafted phrase or turn of worded thought. Spike's latest lab tests have come back clean. Spike and Elaine are joyful for that.
