Helicopter parents invade job fairs

15th Nov 2006, 04:18 GMT

Filed under: College, Family togetherness, Moms, Dads By now everyone's heard of "helicopter parents": the overbearing, obnoxious twits who hover around their kids' schools making sure they get the right teachers, the right grades, the right position on the soccer team, from kindergarten through high school. Well, there are some reports that those nutbuckets have taken things a step further, and are now hovering around their college-aged kids' lives, writing their resumes, hounding career counselors, showing up at job fairs and even calling prospective employers to ask why their kid didn't get a job. "It has now reached epidemic proportions," says Michael Ellis, director of career and life education at Delaware Valley College, a small, private school in Doylestown, Pa. In this article, he cites several examples of helicopter parents acting obnoxious at college job fairs and even sitting in on and answering questions at job interviews. Ellis also reports that he has talked to other folks with his job at other colleges, and all insist this is happening everywhere. Everyone wants what's best for their kids and it's getting harder and harder to compete in this economy, but what service are this parents really providing their kids by doing all the work for them? What's next, are they going to show up at their kids' jobs and do the work for them? We all love our kids, but sometimes doing what's best for them is sitting back and letting them figure out what they need to do. Read | Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments
