Chemotherapy can increase risk of hip injuries

Filed under: Chemotherapy A well known side effect of radiation is bone damage. That damage can be especially detrimental to older women when it occurs in the hip area that has been previously treated with radiation therapy. Older, post-menopausal women are already at a higher risk for bone damage due to the drop in estrogen levels, a hormone that helps to protect bone density. A recent study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association studied 6,428 women over the age of 65 who had been diagnosed with pelvic cancer. The half that received chemotherapy treatment was at a nearly 70% higher risk for pelvic fractures.
