There are many techniques used to quit smoking. The cold turkey approach, hard for most people. The nicotine patch, helps taper nicotine addiction. Hypnosis, meditation and so on. But according to Ellen Gritz, Ph.D., of the M.D. Anderson Cancer Center and colleagues in today's online edition of the journal Cancer, one of the best moments to help a patient stop smoking is right after the announcement that thay have cancer. Dr. Gritz states that at the by using the shocking moment of diagnosis as a motivating factor to make life changes, the patient is more likely to stick to them. Patients who quit smoking after a cancer announcement have a 70% success rate, as opposed to the 20% rate of the general population. "Many cancer patients are highly motivated and interested in quitting smoking at diagnosis," said Michelle Cororve Fingeret, Ph.D., a co-author of the study. "This creates a teachable moment in which patients are more receptive to smoking cessation treatment and therefore are more likely to successfully quit."
