The unstoppable advertisement?

14th Nov 2006, 21:14 GMT

Filed under: Advertising, News According to Radar Online, a number of Time Warner Cable customers have noticed some odd behavior in the PVRs they received from their cable company. They can't seem to fast forward through ads for Dewar's Whiskey, a Bacardi brand. Apparently the ads are common during Comedy Central's The Daily Show and The Colbert Report. I haven't noticed any problems skipping commercials when viewing those programs on my BeyondTV machine. One user comment on the Radar article seems to indicate that the problem may not be limited to the Dewar's ad, but to any commercial that features plain text on the screen for an extended period. Apparently if you hold down the fast forward button long enough it will eventually register. Although Dewar's representatives deny that they designed their commercial to be skip-proof, there are several benefits to putting plain-text on a screen at this point. First, even if you are fast forwarding through a 30-second ad, you'll still have a second or two to read the screen. And second, if it actually does confuse some PVRs, well there you go. Note to advertisers: On the other hand, a very small portion of the population is using PVRs to skip through ads, so you could also wind up pouring your money into a visually uninteresting commercial spot.
