The Stern Report said climate change, left unchecked, could shrink the global economy by 20 per cent. Two days ago, the International Energy Agency said global oil demand will rise 38 per cent, to 116 million barrels a day, by 2030 unless governments find a way to decouple energy use and GDP growth. Alarmingly, oil demand that high would boost the output of carbon dioxide, the main greenhouse gas, by 55 per cent.
