Nielsen redefines "live" for the second time this year

13th Nov 2006, 17:55 GMT

Filed under: Advertising, News Back in January, ratings company Nielsen Media Research said it would begin defining "live" TV as anything that viewers watched within 8 seconds of its original broadcast. This week, Nielsen amended that definition, saying that "live" TV was anything you watch within 25 seconds of its broadcast. The change is to accommodate delays introduced by the broadcaster and by homes using set-top boxes such as PVRs. I don't know about you, but every now and again I'll be watching something on live TV at the same time as a friend in another room or on the phone, only to realize that I'm actually receiving the signal a few seconds behind them. I'm not entirely sure why Nielsen really needs to take this into account, but if they stretch the definition much further (say to 5 or 10 minutes), they're going to start including people who intentionally start watching a show late so that they can skip through the commercials.
