So far, international pressure, sanctions and isolation have failed to win any concessions from Hamas. The Islamist party insists - and rightly so - that it is the legitimate representative of the Palestinians and that its positions therefore best embody the views of the Palestinian people. But the party's leaders often erroneously imply that by virtue of being elected, other states are required to accept their policies.
