Babies still an option for those with ovarian cancer?

13th Nov 2006, 21:00 GMT

Filed under: Health and Safety, Pregnancy and Birth A new study out from Stanford University has found that young women diagnosed with ovarian cancer could go on to have children, thanks to a new option that avoids a hysterectomy. The researchers focussed on women of childbearing age and found that if a "fertility-sparing surgery" was used for treatment, survivors could likely go on to have families of their own. The key would be in early detection of the disease. Known as "the silent killer," ovarian cancer often goes unnoticed until it's too late. Though the majority of those diagnosed are over the age of 50, the disease does affect a number younger women also. With survival rates considerably higher in younger patients, researchers have struggled to find a way to keep the reproductive door open. In the past, a hysterectomy, which involves the removal of the uterus, was the only option for those diagnosed. This study holds hope for countless women who are fighting for their lives. It offers a window into what the future may still hold. For those who have dreamed of having a biological child, this news may be just the psychological boost needed to push through the disease to wellness.
