Parents find health books too revealing for adolescents

2nd Oct 2005, 14:10 GMT

Friday we reported that some parents found a Seventeen magazine article explicit and offensive, with one parent saying that that kind of information belongs in school, not magazines. Apparently, some parents of middle-schoolers in Sioux Falls, South Dakota think that there are some things even school textbooks shouldn’t show. These parents are upset with the graphic nature of some teaching materials used in the schools. The health teaching manuals in question are part of a new curriculum for grades six through eight that emphasize disease prevention and healthy living. Several parents say that the books go too far. “That information is just totally not appropriate, certainly not for my children,” said one parent. “This stuff is graphic. It’s detailed. It tells about orgasms.” A group of parents plan to discuss the curriculum next week at a meeting facilitated by the Abstinence Clearinghouse and the South Dakota Family Policy Council.
