Theaters discover lobby video ads can help pay the bills

13th Nov 2006, 21:30 GMT

Filed under: Indoor, Networks What says a nice evening out at the theater more than sherry and a great cheese selection? How about video screens in the lobby playing ads? As unrefined as that might sound that's exactly what some theaters are now doing in the face of falling subscriber bases and philanthropic donations. The screens are part of the new StageVision network from the National Corporate Theater Fund, a network that's being sponsored by Sharp Electronics, which is also supplying the screens. A mainstay of movie theaters and such, the ad-playing screens are a tactic to try and financially prop up a number of theaters across the country. If the test is successful it could lead to a whole new ad network in even more theaters. Theatergoers are an advertiser's dream demographic since they typically earn more and are better educated. It's also a great opportunity for theater companies to put on productions that might not have been commercially viable otherwise since the ad money can make up the difference. That means, as a former theater geek, I can't take issue with this too much. Darnit. I really wanted to have some righteous indignation at corporate intrusion into the arts. Oh well.
