Hispanic women less likely to seek breast cancer surgery

Filed under: Prevention According th the February 15, 2006 issue of CANCER , patients who relegate major medical decisions to other family members may be more inclined to have mastectomies rather than breast conserving surgery(BCS). One such group that falls into the category is older Hispanic women. Typically Caucasian women are more likely to pursue BCS than African-American or Hispanic women, the women in the latter group are also more likely to die from cancer complications. Currently Hispanics comprise the largest growing population in the United States, the need to discover the reasons for the decision making process is vitally important to cancer treatment for this ethnic group.%uFFFD One such train of thought is an emphasis on physicians to acknowledge patients' family members as potential key participants in medical decision-making, rather than merely as translators and emotional supporters.
