The most compelling rationale for the U.S.-led war on Iraq was the assertion that it was necessary to topple the tyrannical regime of Saddam Hussein and replace it with a democratic government that would respect the human rights of its citizens. Indeed, after the claims of weapons of mass destruction and Saddam's links to Al-Qaeda were debunked, it was the only remaining valid argument for the war.
