Right now this VeriSign service is only available in Austria. Mobilkom Austria and ONE wireless customers will now be able to purchase sodas from Coca-Cola vending machines through their mobile phones (source). Providing this convenient way of purchasing products from vending machines through your handset seems to be good business. According to the Yankee Group, off-deck mobile payment transactions will go up more than 100% from 2005 to 2009 as users of this service will reach178.8 million . Already mobile phone payments has been experiencing terrific success in Europe and Asia. Chances are, buying sodas is only the beginning. If VeriSign could also develop the interface that would allow handset owners to pay for goods via your ordinary cash register, VeriSign will literally be the company “Where it all comes together.”
