Cancer research collaboration effort in the works

Filed under: Prevention Currently one half of U.S. men and one in three women will develop cancer in their lifetimes. That staggering number will become even more so as the baby boomers approach their golden years. In an effort to combat these statistics, researchers from around the nation are collaborating their knowledge in an effort to create a genetic map of cancer. "The challenge of cancer is its complexity," said leading cancer geneticist Dr. Ronald DePinho, of Harvard Medical School and the Dana Farber Cancer Institute. "There are a staggering number of genetic alterations that occur." By combining the efforts of specialists from a number of fields, the developers of this project are hoping to make some serious headway into the mysteries of cancer.
