Choices for life after a diagnosis

6th Dec 2005, 16:56 GMT

Filed under: Colon and Rectal Cancer, Pancreatic Cancer, Stories I just read a beautiful essay by Carol Levine, director of the Families and Health Ca re Project at the United Hospital Fund in New York City. Her piece is about her mother and how her mom chose to live out her life after being diagnosed with colon cancer. Her mother decided to have surgery, but not the chemotherapy. She lived out her life for a year after the procedure and died at home, in peace and with her daughter by her side She was very direct about her wishes to let go, and her daughter honored them to the end. Tomorrow is my mother's birthday, she will be 63. We have had the opportunity to spend some extra time together lately and have had some wonderful discussions. One such chat was about her own mother who passed away at age 67 from pancreatic cancer. My grandmother was quite ill and in the later stages of cancer when she was diagnosed. She spent much of her last months in the hospital and died at a hospice. My mother, though still young and quite spry, has said that when it comes to be her time she, too, wants to let go peacefully. Until then she plans to exercise, write, pursue her photography and enjoy life. Read Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments
