Decision-makers content to watch from a distance

Ames, Ia. — Big Game. Big decisions? Sure, football coaches Kirk Ferentz of Iowa and Dan McCarney of Iowa State will make some hard choices when the Hawkeyes and Cyclones meet at 2:30 p.m. today inside Jack Trice Stadium. But how does gambling on fourth down or attempting a fake field goal compare to the challenges faced by some of the states biggest decision-makers outside the sports world? A crowd of 53,000 will monitor every strategic move Ferentz and McCarney make this afternoon, and millions more will analyze the outcome while watching a television broadcast that reaches more than half of the nation. Sound tough? Then imagine managing a roster of 32,000 students, or calling the shots for a company that produces 6,000 gallons of sauce every 24 hours, or trying to pass legislation in the U.S. Senate.
