New Zealand high school students can text speak in exams

13th Nov 2006, 21:00 GMT

Filed under: Lifestyle, Media, High school, Public school I occasionally use "BRB" and "TTYL" in my instant message correspondence, but I never imagined those acronyms might be considered acceptable "words" of the English language - especially in an exam situation. But in New Zealand, this seems to be the case. Starting this year, New Zealand's high school kids will be able to use "text speak" - the perplexing acronym language prevalent in text messaging and IM chats so beloved by teens - in their national exams. Teens will be able to write essays that include the "words" BRB, LOL, and CUL8R. An authority explains that full English is encouraged in exam, but credit will be given if the answer "clearly shows the required understanding" of the question. Even if LOL is somehow involved in the answer. I hope they don't include OMG. That's taking it too far, isn't it? Critics claim that allowing these acronyms as an acceptable form of English could damage the language. I think we already damaged it when we decided to spell through with an "ough" but that's just me. Read | Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments
