Give 'em Hell, Kayne!

5th Sep 2005, 12:41 GMT

When Kayne West departed from the script during the hurricane relief telecast to criticize Bush's handling of the situation in New Orleans, NBC cut away from him and even apologized for his remarks. But was Kayne correct? Let's consider the history of FEMA, the Federal Emergency Management Agency. It was established under Carter and by the time of the Clinton presidency had a record of not only helping people promptly during natural disasters but also of completing projects that lessened the impact of natural disasters. When Bush took office, he appointed Joe Albaugh to head the agency. Under Albaugh and on Bush's watch, the agency's mandate was to "restore the predominant role of state and local response to most disasters." The emphasis on preventing flooding was reversed and funding for flood prevention projects was cut in half. Albaugh left and Michael D. Brown was appointed in his place. He had previously been employed by the International Arabian Horse Association. Look at their website to determine what about that job prepared Brown to head FEMA. Brown was interviewed this Thursday on CNN by Paula Zahn. When he told her that until Thursday, the federal government didn't know about the 15,000 people trapped without provisions in the Superdome, Paula was totally incredulous. Bush, on the other hand, later clapped Brown on the back and said he was doing "one heck of a job." We remind you that the high water vehicles of the National Guard of Louisiana had been sent to Iraq. So let's review. Bush carries out numerous policies that leave the poorest people of New Orleans with absolutely no resources, it is his policies that lead to people dying when wiser decisions would have left them alive, he leaves people to starve and then allows troops to shoot the starving people for looting, and NBC apologizes for Kayne West saying that Bush doesn't care about those poor people?
