Mondays at the Hoy -- Tournament Results

Filed under: Bloggers, Tournaments, Online Games, No Limit Texas Hold'em Mondays at the Hoy went off last night with its usual mid-teens participation, including most of the tournament regulars as well as a few new or at least rare faces for this event. Joining us for the first time was armature, out of Austin, Texas, home of a surprising number of other poker bloggers, including among others Mookie, who hosts his big weekly tournament every Wednesday night on Full Tilt. Also making a rare Hoy appearance was CJ, the original luckbox himself from all-time great poker blog Up For Poker. We also had high-stakes players Wes and Fuel55 grace us with their presence last night, joining with a number of other poker bloggers to round out one of the tougher and more distinguished fields that Mondays at the Hoy has seen in some time. Unfortunately, yours truly busted out first when I made a decent cash game call, but a horrible call for early in a freezeout tournament. As I've focused more and more on tournament play in my online poker playing career, I have written often about how little sense it typically makes to take on a 50-50 race situation early in a tournament. Unlike a cash game where you can always reach back into your pocket for more chips, in a normal tournament structure like the Hoy your chips are always at a premium since you can't get any more once you lose them. Thus, let's say you've got AK and you're pretty sure from the way your single opponent reraises you that he has a medium pocket pair when he puts you allin before the flop. In a cash game, if you've got lots of money behind, you might well want to take that chance at a 50% shot of doubling up early on. In a tournament, however, especially during the early rounds, it generally does not comport with winning strategy to risk all your chips on a 50-50 shot. If you lose, which is just as likely as you winning, you're done. Finito. So why take the chance, when you can just fold and wait for a better percentage chance to add to your chipstack in the event? Well, even though I know this well and have written about it many, many times, last night I was faced with the same decision very early in Mondays at the Hoy, and I have to admit I was tempted. Fuel55 put me allin on a King-high flop where I held the nut flush draw with my Ax of clubs. I knew I had 9 outs to the nut flush, and plus from Fuel's strange allin bet on the flop I figured the other three Aces also had to be winners. 12 outs twice means I was just about a 45% dog to win the hand. Despite this, and despite all the talk about not taking 50% chances (or less) early on in tournaments, I watched in horror as my finger clicked the "Call" button, and I failed to improve and that was it. Sadly -I never even got a chance to deliver on my bounty as I was not sucked out on before I busted from the tournament. In my absence, congratulations are in order to armature for his 3rd place cash in his first ever Hoy tournament, as well as to CJ for coming in 2nd place after a tough heads-up battle that lasted a good 15 or 20 minutes before this week's champion was finally crowned. And that champion for this week is Guin (Mungo36), winning what might even be his second Mondays at the Hoy tournament after outlasting perennial suckerouter CJ to take down the crown as well as the $160 first prize for the event. Thank you to all who played, and we'll see you next week for Mondays at the Hoy! Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments
