Every two weeks, Terry and Marj Rak go to the local Safeway to buy Terry's cancer medication. It's called Avastin, and it costs $3,000 a dose. They have taken out a loan to pay the bills. ''We get air miles at Safeway,'' says Marj. ''We always order it on days when we can get the bonus miles.'' Then they go to a hospital, where the medication is infused intravenously.
