Police: Woman hits news carrier with van
15th Nov 2005, 00:23 GMT
A 22-year-old woman who police said attempted to run over a newspaper carrier in front of a Brevard County beachside supermarket this morning was arrested after a brief pursuit by officers. Molly Adrienne Brown, visiting Melbourne from North Carolina, was charged with fleeing to elude police, aggravated assault and operating a motor vehicle with a suspended license after Melbourne police were called to investigate the disturbance. Theresa Clarke, an independent delivery contractor for FLORIDA TODAY, was not seriously injured. The incident happened about 2:42 a.m. in the parking lot of the Winn-Dixie grocery store located at 961 E. Eau Gallie Boulevard. Witnesses told police that Brown was driving a 2002 silver Pontiac van erratically in the parking lot. At one point, Brown backed the van into Clarke, who was at a staging area for delivery of FLORIDA TODAY newspapers. "She (Brown) backed the van into the victim. The victim's knees hit the bumper and a handprint found on the rear window confirms her story," said Cmdr. Jim Gibbens, a spokesman for the Melbourne Police Department. Police said Brown drove off from the plaza's parking lot but was captured with help from the Brevard County sheriff's aviation unit less than 10 minutes later. The helicopter was already out on an unrelated call when it assisted Melbourne police in tracking the truck to the area of Michigan Avenue and State Road A1A, about four miles south of where the incident happened, officials said. Police took Brown in for questioning but did not have a motive for the behavior, officials said. She was later transported to the Brevard County Jail in Sharpes. Brown was also charged with possession of a controlled substance after police found two pipes, two grams of cannabis and a tablet of an anti-seizure medication belonging to her, officials said.
