(SH) - Legend has it that Zeus was unsure of the location of the center of the world. And so he released two eagles, one from the farthest reaches of the east and one from the farthest west, commanding them to fly toward each other. Where they met was declared the center of the earth. Zeus marked this spot with a large stone and called it Omphalos, meaning "the navel." To the ancient Greeks, this sacred place, also known as Delphi, represented the navel - the very center - of all creation. And were this stone ever to be displaced, the world would descend into chaos.
