FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. - Ten people are charged with taking part in a $4 million scheme to create counterfeit identification cards and checks from personal information stolen in order to access bank accounts. Members of the well-organized group used counter-surveillance tactics and disguises when committing the crimes, usually at drive-through lanes at South Florida banks, the U.S. Attorney's Office said Thursday. Some members of the group provided fake Florida driver's licenses and employee ID cards in the names of individuals whose personal information had been stolen from their cars or homes, prosecutors alleged. Other members of the ring cashed counterfeit checks ranging from $1,500 to $5,000 made payable in the names of the victims, prosecutors said. The defendants are charged with conspiracy to commit bank fraud, bank fraud, conspiracy to commit aggravated identity theft, and aggravated identity theft. According to documents from U.S. District Court in Miami, the banks that were allegedly defrauded include Bank of America, Wachovia, Union Planters, BankOne and SunTrust, the South Florida Sun-Sentinel reported.
