Blood Brothers Live At Irving Plaza

Filed under: NY Doll I've already professed my love for the Seattle based band, The Blood Brothers, and this last Saturday I had the extreme pleasure of seeing them live for the very first time. The show itself was everything I had anticipated -- lots of screaming and flailing limbs, a mosh pit full of adolescent males and off the charts intensity. It was pretty great aside from all the young people there. Upon arriving it suddenly occured to me that I hadn't been to Irving Plaza in over 3 years at least and the audience there on Saturday made me realize why. Irving Plaza is a fairly giant venue (about the size of The Fillmore in San Francisco) and most of the shows there are 18 and over, some even 16 and over. I used to go there when I first moved to New York and was into bands like Jurassic 5. Anyway the audience for The Blood Brothers reminded me of when I was that age so it was fun and slightly annoying at the same time. Also the band itself seems to be changing to fit some sort of mold for the post-punk band "look" - or at least co-lead singer Johnny Whitney is. I was standing in the VIP area (I'm so fancy!) with an unrecognizable Whitney standing not even three feet from me. In fact, I didn't figure out it was him until he took the stage! He bleached his hair practically white and messed it up into a giant 'fro. I guess that's the punk look? In any event the show was great, they played right before ...And You Shall Know Us By The Trail Of The Dead (perhaps of the best band names in existence), who was even more amazing than I had anticipated with a bit more sophisticated audience. Blood Brothers and Trail Of The Dead are on a national tour right now. If you have a chance to see them you should! Permalink | Email this | Comments
