While most Canadians were eating dinner Wednesday night, Barrick Gold Corp. chief executive officer Greg Wilkins was fretting that he had just missed the opportunity of a lifetime.For three days, Mr. Wilkins had been trying to turn his company's hostile bid for Placer Dome Inc. into a friendly deal. He knew that Denver-based archrival Newmont Mining Corp. had all its top brass in Toronto, vying for the same prize. Early Tuesday, Newmont's CEO and president were spotted climbing into the BCE Place elevators that led to the offices of Placer's financial advisers at CIBC World Markets.
