Chirac: France Must Learn Hard Lessons

But what will they teach America? Guardian Unlimited reports: “Rioting declined for a third consecutive night last night after the French government invoked laws allowing local authorities to impose curfews and put people under house arrest. Since rioting began, on October 27, when two teenagers of Tunisian and Mauritanian descent were accidentally electrocuted in an electricity substation while fleeing from police, the number of cars burnt each night has become a measure of the intensity of the unrest. The worst night of violence, on Sunday, saw more than 1,400 cars set ablaze.” Clashes none the less continued between police and people in the banlieues - the suburbs of French cities, where most of France’s Arab and African immigrants and their descendants live in overcrowded conditions with unemployment running as high as 40%. If conditions are crowded and there are no jobs, maybe that’s a sign - a hint, a warning - immigration shouldn’t continue. Just a thought. Seems logical. Nonetheless, for purposes of political expediency, you hear France’s President Jacques Chirac promising jobs and money. But you can’t give what you don’t have. Even the French know that. Other plans are at work to deal with the immigrant problem, to be sure. Perhaps they’ll show America a few new tricks. Wait and see. Mr de Villepin has been accused of losing political nerve after invoking the emergency laws on Monday. The measures date back to 1955, when the Algerian war of independence was at its height. . . . However, three-quarters of the French public support the emergency laws, according to a poll in Le Parisien newspaper. Mr de Villepin’s more moderate stance had initially led to his being politically outflanked by the more populist Mr Sarkozy. Mr Sarkozy, whose early description of the rioters as a “rabble” was said to have stoked the violence, prompting calls for his resignation, continued to push a rightwing line on the affair yesterday. He told parliament that 120 foreigners convicted of involvement in the riots would be expelled from the country, even if they had residence permits. The move echoed calls by the National Front leader, Jean-Marie Le Pen, for people of immigrant backgrounds to be stripped of their French citizenship and send “back” to their countries of descent if found guilty of crimes. In a related story, AP reports: “French far-right leader Jean-Marie Le Pen claimed Wednesday his National Front party has been ’submerged’ with prospective members and supportive e-mail since rioting erupted in heavily immigrant communities near Paris.” In an interview with The Associated Press, Le Pen described the recent violence as “just the start” of conflicts caused by “massive immigration from countries of the Third World that is threatening not just France but the whole continent.” Le Pen said people with immigrant backgrounds who commit crimes should be stripped of their French nationality and sent “back to their country of origin.“ Reminded that the vast majority of youths taking part in the arson and rioting are French, born in France to immigrant parents, he said: “What does that mean? Are they French because they have a French identity card?” Sounds like Mssr. Le Pen has a great respect and love for his country, and he’s suggesting that those people allowed to enter and reside therein are expected to feel the same national pride. That’s not asking too much, is it? French nationality should be given only to those who ask for it and “who are worthy of it,” he said. That’s probably going to ruffle some feathers; liberal sensibilities. But consider: What sense does it make for a country to allow ongoing immigration of people who possess no skills or resources, and must rely on government to support them? “Those who get nationality automatically, who don’t consider themselves French and who even say publicly that they consider France their enemy should not be treated as French.” Replace the word “French” with “American.” Now re-read it. Slowly. If that’s considered being “far-right,” we may be guilty as charged. Namely, when a cancer emerges from within the body, you don’t feed it; you pluck it out. If an immigrant calls their host country an enemy, the’ve got no businesses living there. The consequences are now evident. Earlier today, FOXNews’ correspondent Jonathon Hunt reported: “I can tell you that many average citizens are having sympathy to those views. I spoke to a leading French intellectual today who said ‘political correctness cannot stand in the way of the hard truth and that is: many of these young immigrants, in particular, and the children of immigrants simply do not want to be a part of what is seen as traditional French society.” Political correctness cannot stand in the way of truth. Indeed. Not anymore. UPDATE: (10/11) Ed Morrissey notes the American media’s loss of interest in the Muslim immigrant riots in France: Does the American media suffer from ADHD and find themselves incapable of following an important story for longer than ten days? Or do they find themselves increasingly unable to explain the serious and continued violence despite the bribery and politically-correct strategies employed by French security forces? (Hat tip: Michelle Malkin) Actually, we think it has more to do with the news highlighted above and what it reveals. Namely, France is experiencing a major cultural shift with a nationalistic, conservative, anti-immigration movement gaining credence and gathering strength while pointing to the failures of an arrogant, liberal, socialist experiment — now visible for the whole world to see. This occurs when immigration no longer leads to assimilation, when a proverbial “melting pot” stops melting and boils over. Does anyone really expect the MSM to cover that?
