When Arnold Pereira walks home at night, the noise hits him a block away, long before he reaches the door.At other times, in other places, he would have stiffened up and swallowed hard as he neared the doorstep. These days, the sound only quickens his homeward pace along gritty Geary Avenue, near Dufferin and Dupont Streets, where his small warehouse apartment awaits.
