On October 6, 1981, at the Victory Day military parade, Vice President Hosni Mubarak saw his predecessor gunned down only meters from where he stood. Seven people besides President Anwar Sadat were killed, and another 28 wounded, in a barrage of bullets fired at close range in full view of the Presidential Guard and the armed forces.
