UCLA study identifies $7 in societal savings for every $1 spent on drug abuse treatment

Every dollar spent on substance abuse treatment generates $7 in monetary benefits for society, a new UCLA study shows. Published Oct. 20 in the Online Early section of the peer-reviewed journal Health Services Research, the study finds that the average $1,583 cost of substance abuse treatment is offset by monetary benefits such as reduced costs of crime and increased employment earnings totaling $11,487.
