Not only is unicycling fun, it helps the growing body

Every year his Waldorf school has a block on unicycles for their movement program and a mad, frenzied interest in unicycling ensues. I always cringe when I hear him utter the word unicycling. Yes, I would rather have him barreling down a mountain at high speeds on his snowboard, than perched atop a bike riding device with just one wheel. We all have our fears, one of mine is whisking my son to the ER because he was riding a crazy one wheeled bike. But he assured me that the class was not just a Waldorf thing, it was being given by a local high school ski team that uses the cycles to improve their balance. Then and there I decided to look in to unicycling and see what it was all about. Turns out the one wheeled bike is making a bit of a return. The benefits of riding a unicycle include not only improved balance, but back strength and gross motor coordination enhancement. After some research, I learned that unicycling is actually quite popular among teens and adults the world over. I still don't want to hop atop one, but it sounds like many other people are enjoying the sport. What about you? Ever ridden one? Read | Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments
