Makers of birth control patch issue increased risk statement

We told you in July about a report which suggested use of the birth control patch Ortho Evra put women at greater risk of blood clots than had been originally disclosed. Today the makers of Ortho Evra confirmed the AP’s original report, issuing a warning about the increased risks. The original report said that patch users die and suffer from blood clots three times higher than women on the pill. The increased risk, researchers say, is caused by the increased estrogen taken into the body via the patch. Though the pill and patch contain the same amounts of estrogen, the patch delivers the hormone at a higher levels at a more constant rate.
