Filed under: College Given what most of the rest of the world thinks of the United States these days, it makes sense that more American college students than ever are studying abroad in non-English speaking countries. It's harder for American students to understand all that foreign jibba jabba about why America sucks in non-English speaking countries. Seriously, why would you go to England or Ireland to listen to people with funny accents talk about how much they hate America, when you could go somewhere else where they don't speak English at all except when graciously accepting your tourist dollars? U.S. college students are choosing destinations like China, India, Argentina and Brazil more than ever. The U.K., with its easy-to-understand professors, remained the most popular study destination in 2005, according to annual figures released by the Institute of International Education, followed by Italy, Spain and France. Despite the popularity of the U.K. as a study-abroad destination, the number of students going there and Australia is declining, even as the number of American students abroad rose 8 percent overall to 205,983 in 2005.
