Hasn't been a good year on Wall St., but there's always the TSX

Three-quarters of the way into the year, and what do U.S. equity markets have to show for it? Zilch. After nine months, less a day, of wheel-spinning, the SandP 500 index closed yesterday at 1,227.68 -- up a paltry 16 points, or 1.3 per cent, from its end-of-2004 close of 1,211.92. Should the SandP 500 lose ground in the quarter's final trading session today, it could dip into the red at the three-quarter mark -- something that's all but guaranteed for the two other major U.S. stock indexes, the Dow Jones industrial average (down 2.1 per cent since the year began) and the Nasdaq composite (down 1.6 per cent).
