Filed under: Breast Cancer, Alternative Therapies According to a study conducted at the UW-Madison Center of Excellence in Cancer Communication Research, socioeconomic status does not affect online breast cancer support users. The research team gave 144 women, all diagnosed with breast cancer, free computer hardware, Internet access and training in how to use an online health education and support system. After six months the data reflected some surprising results. While affluence did not have the prominent influence expected, women with more positive outlooks of their physical, social and psychological states used the online support groups more frequently. The most unexpected results showed that the women who had the strongest family support networks used the online systems the most. The researchers determined that the women who felt they had more at stake, such as family ties or a close community of friends, felt more inclined to seek online help and express their feelings to others.
