New camera image sensor for cellphones
13th Nov 2006, 08:16 GMT
Cameras in cellphones have come a long way since the introduction of the VGA variant many years ago, thanks to huge strides in image sensor technology. OmniVision has successfully developed a new Square Graphics Array (SGA) camera chip sensor that is capable of a 400 x 400 resolution, also known as the OV6680. Meant for use as a secondary camera in 3G handsets for video calls, this SGA chip boasts outstanding low-light sensitivity. The OV6680 is capable of operating up to 30fps in SGA resolution. You can expect to see the OV6680 appear in 3G cellphones next year onwards as mass production will commence in Q4 2006.
