Are you allergic to sex?

13th Nov 2006, 21:00 GMT

Filed under: Health and Safety So, you want to have a baby. You've been dreaming about cribs and blankets for quite some time now. Only problem? Well, every time you have sex, you end up with red and swollen inner and outer vaginal areas. Could you be allergic to sex? According to this article, that could be the case. Much like any other allergy, the symptoms described show up quickly after intercourse and usually end within a few hours. But for an unlucky few, the allergy symptoms could turn into hives and breathing problems. Usually, the woman isn't allergic to the penis or the sperm but the proteins in the seminal fluid. If you have this allergy, switching partners won't help; it is an allergy to all seminal proteins, not just one or two. So, what to do? Well, you can use a condom, as long as you don't have an allergy to latex. But, if you can't do that, there are other options. Antihistamine or vaginal Cromolym sodium can be used. You would also need to be tested for this allergy by an allergist and possibly have injections, much similar to "allergy shots," to try and desensitize the woman to the allergy. But what if you want to get pregnant? Common sense says using a condom is out of the question and it is kind of hard to want to get pregnant if you break out in hives every time you do the act. You'll have to go to a lab to have the sperm separated from the semen, in a process called "sperm washing." You would then have to be inseminated (or, actually, insperminated) in order to get pregnant. But, of course, don't just assume you are allergic to semen. Make sure it isn't an allergy to the lubricant used or the condom. And, as always, check with your doctor if you're having health concerns. Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments
