Fiber might not be the be all and end all

Filed under: Colon and Rectal Cancer, Prevention Eating fiber has long been a standard for many of us as we strive for a healthy, balanced diet. Fiber is supposed to move things along, so to speak, and clean out our colons leaving them squeaky clean and at a lower risk for cancer. However, according to some studies, consuming fiber is not as beneficial as once thought. Dr Yikyung Park, formerly of the Harvard School of Public Health, Boston, and the study's lead researcher, said: "The association between dietary fiber intake and risk of colorectal cancer has been inconsistent among observational studies. We did not find support for a linear inverse association between fiber intake and risk of colorectal cancer." For those of who enjoy a nice baked potato or a spinach salad, this news is not a big deal. But perhaps for those who instead enjoy potato chips, this may be fabulous news.
