Police sweeps stir day laborers' homes

"For Rent" signs have blossomed in the Forest Place neighborhood since Lawrenceville police held a roadblock and code enforcement sweep there in weeks past. Gone are the cars parked on lawns, debris piles and backyard chickens. Missing, too, are many of the immigrant tenants who rented the brick duplexes. Fewer tenants now wait nearby on Grayson Highway looking for work. While before, perhaps 75 men waited each morning, now only about 20 or 30 appear. But their numbers could grow again.
