The crushing defeat suffered by US President George W. Bush's Republican Party in last week's congressional elections has shattered the edifice of unilateralism that the White House had erected around its misguided Middle East policy. This and the firing of Defense Secretary Rumsfeld have combined to reduce the number of obstacles to the adoption of a more pragmatic approach.
