New research in the Annals of Oncology (30 November) -- into the cost of using the breast cancer drug Herceptin -- warns healthcare authorities and the organisations not to rush to prescribe the drug for early breast cancer without working out the budget implications and cost-effectiveness of it. The drug may turn out to be cost-effective, but researchers conclude it will mean hard bargaining on price and tough choices on reallocating resources.
