New radiation therapy for breast cancer
16th Jan 2006, 15:24 GMT
The National Cancer Institute (NCI) has some great news for women who have undergone lumpectomies and are now facing radiation therapy. The traditional follow up radiation therapy of six weeks has been reduced to a mere five days. The new therapy, targeted radiation, sends medicine directly to the site of the tumor. This method has been used on sample groups with great results, and doctors believe those results are positive enough to bring to larger population. A new study is being implemented for women who meet the criteria of the study: their tumormust measure no more than 3 centimeters in diameter, and they must not have more than three cancerous lymph nodes.
