The Winter Of Consoles: Wii, PS3, Xbox 360; And Zune
13th Nov 2006, 08:10 GMT
This is the winter of consoles: PS3 launched over the weekend in Japan, to its attendant craziness, and then there’s Wii from Nintendo, and from Microsoft, Xbox 360 fall update. And yes, also, that thing called Zune, about to launch Nov 14th, and already selling at some Best Buy stores. All of them have implications for content companies, something we’ve been covering for a while. There’s a lot more on all four on Engadget, so click through to this roundup of links from them. Gizmodo‘s crazy about all of these too. -- The PS3 interface video walkthrough, which will give you a good idea of how content/digital media is handled. -- Here’s a story about Wii’s media playback capabilities, and none too impressive, according to the post. -- Zune gets the Mossberg treatment, here: “this first Zune has too many compromises and missing features to be as good a choice as the iPod for most users. The hardware feels rushed and incomplete. It is 60% larger and 17% heavier than the comparable iPod. It has much worse battery life for music than the iPod or than Microsoft claims—at least two hours less than the iPod’s, in my tests. Despite the larger screen, many album covers look worse than they do on the iPod. And you can’t share music libraries between computers like you can with iTunes.” -- And then there’s a Zune contender....Archos 604, with Wi-Fi sharing built in...it was released earlier than Zune, in an effort to cut away for the crazy hype surrounding Zune. Gizmodo takes a spin, here.
