The neighbourhood of Ealing, west London, is perhaps best known for the comedies of the 1950s that were filmed in the famous studio there -- sinister comedies, with a touch of bile, like The Ladykillers. The good people of Ealing apparently share this darkly comic sensibility, Julian Barnes discovered when he read there the other night from his novel Arthur and George.
