Consumer Reports wages war on extended warranties

In today's L.A. Times story, Spending on product warranties targeted , Alana Semuels writes about a Consumer Reports initiative to dissuade consumers from buying extended warranties, which it says are a waste of money. Yesterday while researching the story on Google, Semuels came across How I got suckered into an extended warranty , my recent blog post documenting my travails, and gave me a ring. Most of what we discussed for this short piece ended up on the cutting room floor, including this confession: I have purchased three extended warranties in the past 15 months, and I was about to try to use one of them after we hung up.
