Is Motorola Going Razr Crazy?

The Razr mobile phone helped to turn around then-ailing Motorola by offering a completely different form -- sleek, small, sexy and packed with features -- for the tech savvy and for the common consumer. Today, Motorola continues to spin off variations of the Razr theme in black, silver, magenta, pink and more. There are so many kinds, it's hard to keep track, said Motorola spokeswoman Juli Burda. "The MotoRazr is available across the world in several different technologies, feature sets and colors to address the digital lifestyles of consumers everywhere," Burda said. Motorola is hoping to recapture that same success with yet another member of the Razr family, the Krzr. But some analysts don't think it will be another Razr. "We believe it will be hard for Krzr to have the kind of market impact like the Razr did," Albert Lin, director of research at American Technology Research, said in a report Monday. Motorola announced the Krzr in July and it finally became available last week online from Verizon Wireless for $199.99 with a two-year contract. The phone will be available in Verizon stores, including those inside Circuit City, on Thursday for $199.99 after a $50 mail-in rebate and a two-year contract. It's about a 1/2-inch thick and 1 3/4-inches wide and wrapped in a reflective, metallic gloss finish. It can access VCast music and videos from Verizon as well as MP3 files. Other features include a 1.9-inch color screen, 1.3 megapixel camera with 4x zoom, and optional expandable memory. But will the Krzr be as hot as the Razr, which has sold more than 50 million phones worldwide? Or just another variation on an aging theme?
