Nielsen says DVR playback window is 3 days

Filed under: Television, Controversies My favorite company, Nielsen, has just released the results of a study that is in no way designed to be self-serving or help their case for adding a third data stream to its TV ratings numbers offerings. Right now Nielsen offers "live" and "live plus seven days" data to account for DVR replays. Some have said, though, that seven days is too much and pushed for something in-between those numbers. So look at this: Nielsen now says that according to its numbers 78 percent of DVR users watch the shows they've recorded with three days of the original broadcast. Just as important is the finding that almost a quarter - 22.9 percent to be exact - of prime-time TV minutes are viewed via time-shifting. Reality shows get watched sooner than scripted shows. All this means a lot if you're watching the commercial ratings debate. It means networks will be able to charge a premium for commercial time within reality shows since they get played quicker, meaning marketing timing isn't thrown off as badly. It also means Nielsen will be able to introduce the proposed "live plus three days" data and charge a premium for it because that's when the action is going to be taking place. Like I said, not self-serving at all. Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments
