The decline in boarding school enrollment
9th Sep 2005, 01:25 GMT
Curtis Sittenfeld desperately wanted to go to boarding school and did. But she won’t be sending her own child and she isn’t alone. Enrollment in private day schools has grown 15 percent in the last decade and enrollment at boarding schools has grown only 2.7 percent. There are several theories of why more parents are not choosing boarding schools and this piece looks into them. Parents are more involved in their children’s life today, sometimes overly so. Also being surrounded by the looming issues of adolescence day in and day out can make it difficult to gain perspective on those things which seem horribly overwhelming. Going home at night can allow parents to give some perspective. There is also the self contained nature of extreme wealth boarding schools often provide. A sense of entitlement and privilege, according to Sittenfeld, can often be born in the self contained world of the boarding school. The author has done her very best to convince me I wouldn’t want to send my children to boarding school, even if we had the means. But, her fancy words won’t work on me, just imagine all that free time! [thanks Nicole] (I am kidding. Mostly.) Read | Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments © 2005 Weblogs, Inc.
