Economic Concerns About Wireless Philadelphia
13th Oct 2005, 20:15 GMT
Some analysts are looking at the Wireless Philadelphia/EarthLink deal as good but not perfect. After recent City Council hearings that analyzed the initiative and it’s related costs and the announcement of EarthLink’s move to pay for construction and maintenance of the citywide network, people are still questioning the economics of the project. EarthLink says it will cost them $10 million to $15 million to build the network, but some are saying it will cost over $30 million to do it. (This viewpoint probably depends upon whether you’re for government-sponsored WiFi projects or not.) As a result, the higher the construction/maintenance costs, the higher the cost to the user. The price point (so far) for users is $10 for low-income users and $20 for others. There are other built-in incentives for EarthLink and Wireless Philadelphia, but the fear is that the cost for everyday users will make it unattractive. As I’ve said time and again, let’s see what happens and go from there. Read | Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments © 2005 Weblogs, Inc.
