Police baffled, saddened by death

Three days ago, police were trying to keep Elena Georgiadis from walking to Lawrenceville along the shoulder of the highway with her luggage. Police had gone as far as to lock her up for a couple of days to keep her away from traffic. But a few hours after her release from Gwinnett County's jail on Monday, police picked up her body from a lonely patch of Ga. 316. A truck struck and killed Georgiadis, 26, early Tuesday morning while she stood in a lane of the highway near Ga. 120, police said. She was on the westbound side of the road — the same side as the jail — when the truck hit her, Lawrenceville Police Lt. Jeff Smith said.
